Okay, brace yourselves, I'm going to complain for just a little bit, and because I'm covering an entire month, this is a bit disjointed!....
The beginning of the month of October our family was dealt an enormous disappointment when we learned we would be unable to take a highly anticipated trip to Sheboygan....in part for a Reformation Rally, but mostly to be with friends (and fill our souls with the 'chicken soup' of friendship with like-minded peoples.) Craig just couldn't find subs for 4 MAJOR church year services (3 Reformation AND 1 Confirmation), and though we fully intend to visit as soon as humanly possible, I think it was this disappointment that caused our immune systems to revolt!
Our family has had quite a challenging month health wise... it seems we've been plagued with a fever we've recycled off and on for about 3 weeks, followed by a major head cold. The fever/cold thing happened mainly to the kids and after enough nights of waking every 3-4 hours for 'dose patrol' mom ended up on antibiotics. Dad only had a minor cold, which was a major blessing considering his grueling work schedule!
It was during one of our juice pop/meds/soup runs that Dad and Grace got to see the Oscar Mayer Wiener Mobile, and Dad (to Grace's awe and horror) sang the jingle for an Oscar Mayer Wiener Whistle! Ah, the memories....Too Cool!
We were all better just in time to aggravate our healing immune systems by staying out late (scantily clad) on Halloween....ah, but the candy was worth it!
It was so fun to see Claire get the hang of Trick or Treat, especially since mom had to tackle her to put her costume on! (For the record, she had wanted to wear it non-stop up until All Hallows Eve....) Then mom had to force Claire to pose for pictures and head out for the evening, but after about the third house she caught on and soon was running from house to house. She fell asleep half way home, and even in her slumber, she had a 'death grip' on her trick or treat bag....can you tell she's the youngest of 5?
The only disappointment with Halloween this year was that pumpkins were $8 each (marked down from $9, if you'll believe it...a 'discount' for Halloween Day) and I'm sorry, I'm just too cheap to spend $40 on PUMPKINS for each child! So instead, we stopped at a local church and bought mini-pumpkins for each child for $1.50 each. Each child went right to 'their' pumpkins, and even got to carve their own...sure we didn't have the seeds, but being given the opportunity to handle a super-sharp object seemed to make it all worthwhile.
So, while our bodies are still trying to get their grooves back, the fall schedule is in full swing. The 3 oldest have their Fall Presentations tomorrow, where Ella will speak on Pig Latin, Natalie on Pandas and Grace on our Red-Eared Slider Turtle. Ella is by far the busiest this season (second only to dad) with her choir concert coming up (5 short weeks!) planning meetings and activities with her church youth group and girl scouts (this is a big time of the year for service projects) and sewing her first pair of sleep pants:-).
Ella really is very talented with sewing, and has already completed a fleece blanket and matching pillow just in time for the cooler weather. She is sweet enough to be taking requests from her siblings for the blankets and pillows they would like, of which they are confident she will throw together in her 'spare' time:-). Just so everyone knows, mom only has about 1/2 of an inch of height on Ella, and Ella measures daily in anticipation of that grand day when she exceeds mom in height!
So, that has been October...I can't believe we are already into November...where has the time gone? Please pray for our family...for strength during the super-busy season, for health and for contentment during the times we DO have together! We are so blessed, especially with the privilege of homeschooling, and our time with our children and as a family seems to go SO fast...
Our Warmest Wishes to ALL of you!
